CEE Ahmedabad
CEE, partnering with The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel and Earth Day Network, organized a series of activities on April 22 at The Courtyard, Ahmedabad. These included the screening of the documentary “Home”, a Yann Arthus Bertrand production, about the detrimental effect of man's activities on the environment, followed by an interactive discussion with all the participants.

CEE Delhi
Society for Child Development and the Ministry of Environment and Forests organized ‘Go-Zero -The Carbon Offset Expo' on the 21 and 22 April at Nirman Vihar, East Delhi . The expo brought students, NGO's, hospitals and companies dealing with waste management together in an Earth Day celebration, drawing NGO's and corporates like The World Wide Fund for Nature, The Blind Relief Association, Earth Sense Recyclers and Toxics Link. Chetna Sharma and Divya Pant from WaRM Group represented CEE Delhi .
The event offered CEE an opportunity to interact with various eco-clubs, students, teachers, parents and professionals, and to share its publications and eco-friendly products with the participants. Visiting students learnt about the benefits of recycling waste and waste management initiatives that they could implement in their schools.
To encourage individual contribution for a better environment, Apollo Tyres organised Earth Day celebrations. Priyanka Porwal, Hemlata and Shambhu Sahu of Waste and Resource Management group, CEE Delhi participated and showcased short movies like ‘ Kooda kya Hai' and ‘CEE-Eco Friendly Recycling Unit ' , organized games, and set up a stall to display products made from waste polybags, polyal and waste paper, along with books, brochures and other publications about environmental protection. |

CEE Ranchi
The newly established CEE Ranchi Field Office celebrated Earth Day at Jawahar Vidya Mandir School, Ranchi. CEE along with WWF Bihar jointly organized this event with the objective to create awareness among students, teachers and parents about the environment and to encourage the exploration and expression of new ideas and concerns.

Students from 15 schools participated in elocution, painting and slogan writing activities.

The event offered a platform to students to voice their concerns about the water scarcity prevalent in various regions of Jharkhand. Many spoke about “Rain Water Harvesting System in Urban/Rural Area”. Participants visited the rain water harvesting system on the school campus. Mr. B. Nijalingappa, Senior IFS Officer, Jharkhand Govt, the Chairman of Mecon Ltd, and the Executive Director of SAIL who were present as distinguished guests, strongly advocated the conservative use of resources. |

Think before you Throw
This was the message of the programme organized by CEE North from April 16 – 30, 2010, to observe World Heritage Day at Regional Science City, Lucknow . An inter-school competition on ‘Waste is Resource' was organized and attended by 20 National Green Corps schools.

The schools demonstrated products made from waste.
|
The participants were allowed to use any three types of solid waste from ten categories (ceramic, glass, paper, e-waste, polythene, packaging, metal, clothes, wood, natural material). Eco-club students came up with products in three categories - utility, decorative and utility cum decorative products. Each school team was given an on-the-spot task to prepare a recipe stating the required material and method of creation of their product. An interactive session was organized, which included the screening of the film ‘The Story of Stuff'.

Lucknow Coordinates State – Level Biomedical Waste Workshop
CEE North and Waste and Resource Management group organized a State-level training cum orientation workshop in Lucknow .
The workshop focused on a thorough understanding of the bio-medical waste management (BMWM), related legislations, case studies from Rajasthan and Delhi , implementation concerns, role of various stakeholders, occupational hazards and common treatment facility success stories.
Experts from the MoEF, UNDP, JNU, IGNOU, Rajasthan Health System Development project, CEE, UPPCB and Common Facility Operators were present who discussed various aspects of the BMWM and answered queries. Dr. Shyamala Mani, Programme Director, CEE took the participants through a virtual journey of CHAMP, showcasing its state - of - the - art common facility. The workshop was organized in association with Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board with financial support from Ministry of Environment and Forests. |

Youth for Clean Air: An Online Interactive Course
CEE as the Secretariat for the South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN), supported by UNEP, has developed an online interactive course; “Youth for Clean Air”. The course can be accessed on the website www.sayen.org .

The course was launched by Dr. S.K. Nanda, Principal Secretary, Forest and Environment Department, Government of Gujarat.

This three-hour long course focuses on atmospheric emissions – its sources, impact and efforts to curb it, and also illustrates actions that can be undertaken by the youth - individually and collectively. The course has been developed as an outreach activity of the Malé Declaration on Control and Prevention of Air Pollution and its likely Transboundary Effects for South Asia . An online certificate is awarded after successful completion of the course. |

Canvassing for the Environment
An Environmental Painting Workshop organized at Diu, conducted by CEE and Bal Bhavan, Diu , focused on teaching the art of painting with environment as its theme.
Drawing participation from students in Gujarat, the Union Territory of Daman and DIU , and Rajasthan, it aimed to sensitize students and teach techniques to capture natural works of art in colors. Mr. Premjit Baria, a renowned artist, and director Bal Bhawan, DIU , conducted the workshop, which included interactive sessions, film shows and environmentally educative games. |

Urban Ecological Park at Port Blair
On the invitation from Andaman and Nicobar Forest Department for the development of a botanical garden in Port Blair under the compensatory afforestation programme, Mr. Ramesh Savalia, CEE and Mr. Parth Shah, BPS Architect visited Port Blair.
The purpose of the visit was to interact with forest department officials, get an idea of the physical, ecological, and social environment of the site, and to understand CEE's role with regard to the project and its timelines.

CEE Himalaya
CEE Himalaya with support from Welthungerhilfe celebrated Earth Day in Kashmir at Government Higher Secondary school, Lone Hari, Kupwara district and at Oxford Public School, Palpora, Srinagar district. Hundreds of students and their teachers participated in the events.
Kashmir specific issues like sustainability aspects arising out of heavy presence of armed forces, tourism, global warming, climate change, degradation of forests, soil, and water bodies; excessive use of chemicals in agriculture especially apple orchards, and use of plastic carry bags were highlighted in the event.

A presentation on the theme of the Day was made by CEE team highlighting local environmental issues, various efforts in progress by various agencies and what more needs to be done towards achieving sustainability in the ecologically fragile mountainous Kashmir . Quiz and speech competition were organized. A skit "As you sow so shall you reap" was performed where students played roles giving the message that good quality of environment is a must for good quality of life. Trees were also planted on this occasion. |

CEE Madhya Pradesh
Earth Day celebration at Government Higher Secondary School , Bhopal was facilitated by Dilip Chakravarty and Joseph Kujur from CEE Madhya Pradesh. The programme featured interactive games, quiz and slogan competitions on the importance of planet earth, climate change and global warming. The winners were given prizes by EPCO. |

CEE North East
A day-long Earth Day program was organized by CEE North East in partnership with Maharishi Vidya Mandir 1, Silpukhuri and Maharishi Vidya Mandir 4, Borsojai. Memma Singha, CEE NE facilitated a painting competition and green games like Green Gamble and Count Down with the eco - clubs of both schools.

Learning about Biomedical Waste Management
CEE Madhya Pradesh organized an interactive field visit for St Joseph Nursing School, Hoshangabad, to train 30 nursing students, staff and the Principal on the techniques of biomedical waste management .This included a trip to the Bhopal Incinerator, where the entire waste - treatment system was explained. Dr Sudhakar from Central Pollution Control Board discussed the Central Government's policy on Biomedical Waste Management and details of the 5 Bio-medical waste incinerators working in different cities of MP. The team also visited the Common Effluent Treatment Plant, and was instructed on liquid waste treatment processes and reuse of the treated water in agriculture. |

“Rebuilding Trust” Project Receives National Appreciation
CEE's ‘Rebuilding Trust' project, working for the rehabilitation of earthquake affected people in Kashmir, has been identified as one of the 33 “good practices of civil society on strengthening community resilience through disaster risk reduction in the disaster prone areas of India ”. The recognition is in the publication “Turning The Tide: Good Practices in Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction” produced by Sphere India and Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission on Relief.
CEE's project has been selected from 178 case studies through the survey conducted in consultation with experts and humanitarian practitioners led by Prof N. Vinod Chandra Menon, Member of National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India. CEE's Rebuilding Trust project works for the restoration of traditional and locally sustainable livelihoods to ensure environmentally sustainable development of the villagers, with financial support from CARE India and Welthungerhilfe. |

Cycling Towards a Better Future
A day-long Eco-Cycle Yatra was organized by CEE North with National Green Corps schools in Patna. The students used this opportunity to make an appeal to save the Ganges dolphin as well.

The main objective of this yatra was to convey the handprint message to use bicycles more, thereby reducing society's carbon footprints.

The Eco Cycle Yatra started with 40 eco-club students of Sir G.D. Patliputra Inter-College , Kadamkuan, and covered a distance of around 30 kms. The Chairman of Bihar State Pollution Control Board and the Principal of the school flagged off this yatra .
During their journey, the participating students visited three schools where they were enthusiastically welcomed, and provided with an opportunity to share their experiences with the students. The host school enjoyed this interaction and showed keen interest to participate in such programmes in future.
The Yatra concluded at NGO partner Tarumitra where students were showed a presentation on the evolution of planet Earth, and the effects pollution has had on it. Students were also served uniquely prepared “eco-khichadi ” (recipe made of organic ingredients) by Tarumitra. |

Catalyzing Youth to Safeguard the Environment
A capsule course on “Understanding Environment” was conducted by Waste and Resource Management, East group for the students of Affinity Business School, Bhubaneswar. It focused on the fundamentals of environment and its management. This marked the beginning of CEE-facilitated educational courses in Orissa.

The field trip gave an overview of the lagoon ecosystem of Chilika, and students could closely study its diverse life forms.
|
Discussions, interactive sessions and activities were conducted on various topics of Waste Management, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Sustainable Agriculture, Heath and Environment, Disaster Management, Species Diversity, Environmental Laws, Forest Management etc.
Along with classroom sessions, students were also taken for one-day field visit to Satpada (Chilika lagoon). Irrawaddy Dolphins were the star attraction of this trip. The Satpada Interpretation Centre of Chilika Development Authority (CDA) designed by CEE was also visited by the students. |

Living in a Changing Environment
Prof. Stefan Koppelkamm from Academy of Art, Berlin and Peeyush Sekhsaria, architect-photographer based in Bangalore conducted a workshop 'Living in a Changing Environment' in Pune, organized by Max Mueller Bhavan and Maharashtra Cultural Centre.

Exhibited at Max Mueller Bhavan are the works of the 12 photographers who participated in this workshop. The exhibition unites twelve personal perspectives of the city of Pune . Some of the photographers take you on a discovery tour to places which contribute to the identity of their city, threatened by the dynamics of urban development and neglect. Others take a critical look at the ubiquitous billboards which dominate the appearance of large parts of the city and at the new urban lifestyle symbolized by glass and concrete buildings which are neither adapted to the climate nor to the architectural and cultural context. |
